eVTOL vs. Helicopter: What's the Difference for Personal Flight?

Helicopters and eVTOLs can look similar in the air, both take off straight up, both hover, both reach places a plane can’t. What Is an eVTOL?

eVTOL stands for electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing aircraft. And all of that is backed by a radar-based Emergency Assisted Landing System, motorsport-grade roll cage, and a whole-aircraft ballistic parachute deployable from as low as ten meters.
  • Complexity: Helicopters require coordinating a cyclic, collective, and pedals simultaneously, a skill that takes real training to master. eVTOLs like the HayesX-250 have a simpler operating profile, part of what allows the aircraft to qualify for a more accessible licensing category.

Do You Need a License to Fly an eVTOL?

You do not need a Pilot License to fly a Part 103 category eVTOL in the US.  The HayesX-250 eVTOL is designed to meet FAA Part 103 ultralight vehicle regulations. Under Part 103, no pilot license is required to fly, provided the aircraft meets strict weight and speed limits and operations comply with applicable FAA regulations.  In contrast, most helicopters require a Rotorcraft pilot certificate from the FAA, a significant time and cost investment.  

Are eVTOLs Quieter Than Helicopters?

Generally, yes. A helicopter’s single large rotor at high blade-tip speed is a major source of the low-frequency thump most people associate with helicopter noise. Distributed multirotor eVTOLs like the HayesX-250 spread lift across several smaller propellers, producing a quieter acoustic profile.
